Phenotyping, Animal behaviour and Surgery
This service is in charge of the study of behaviour in experimental animals and in animal models that reproduce pathological or clinical symptoms of human diseases, with special emphasis on brain diseases and ageing. To do so, it is equipped with the latest, most innovative equipment to address behaviours ranging from general physiological aspects to other specific actions linked to motor control and decision-making or cognitive and emotional processes.

As a complement to the behavioural teams, the necessary applications are also available to quantify the behaviour tests, including video tracking systems (EthoVision, ANY-maze) and other specific software. The rooms have a network of high-resolution cameras, as well as thermal or depth cameras, specializing in the identification of functional parameters to facilitate automated analysis using artificial intelligence techniques (such as IdTracker). This service also has an Indirect Calorimetry Unit to measure the nutritional alterations of disease model mice through the PhenoMaster system, which is equipped with individual cuvettes for mice so that metabolic parameters can be determined by indirect calorimetry such as oxygen consumption, production of CO2, respiratory coefficient and energy expenditure. In addition, the system can also monitor the intake, drink and activity of each animal over several days.
